Liquids |
In Quake a lot of great atmosphere can be created with creative uses of liquids. Liquids include water, slime and lava. This tutorial will show how to use liquits inside your level.
This tutorial will show you how to include a liquid within a simple level. There is one thing to think about whenever you place an object in your level "does it fit?" So within this level the water must look like it fits. In my case, I created a simple dungeon looking scene. In my level I created a bridge type arrangement around one side of the room. One note about bridges and lighting: They must be believable. ie: a bridge must have realistic looking supports, it can't simply float in the air. In the case of lighting, there must be a valid looking source, a torch, a window, light fixture, open "sky" textured ceilings etc.
Create a simple, fairly large open room. Include a bridge, put in a couple of lights then comes the time to insert the water. |
In the texture window select a water texture, then create a new brush. The thing to think sbout is that the inside of the brush will be liquid, and it will always stop at any bouds of walls. So, simply make a brush large enough to overlap each of the walls and go beyond the floor. Move it so that the top of the water brush will represetent the surface of the water. Take a look at the pic to the left to see what I mean. |
One note about water: As you can see from my level I have included a way to get out of the water. There is nothing more annoying than having to commit suicide because a level designer created areas where you cannot get out of. Give the players a chance :)
